Help fight Alzheimer's with a Yick Lung Lei
“The long goodbye” is a phrase known by families who watch their loved one fade over time from dementia. In Hawaii, more than a third of households has at least one person over age 65.
With the growth of elderly increasing faster than the overall population, here are some facts from the Alzheimer’s Association website:
-
29,000 people aged 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s in Hawaii.
-
60,000 family caregivers bear the burden of the disease in Hawaii.
-
Growth expected to rise as a public health crisis with a 20.7% increase 2025
-
From 2000 – 2019, there was a 299.2% increase in Alzheimer’s deaths

Caregivers in the islands for individuals living with Alzheimer’s and other dementia need ongoing support and resources for care training, programs and services that are rapidly growing in need.
While government programs as Act 115 signed by Governor David Ige in 2021 offers assistance for employers of first responder personnel to obtain dementia training for their employees, there are many more programs needing support and development to help local families as the weight of our island demographics shift towards a growing elderly population.
Our Fundraiser's Mission:
-
Bring local awareness to our growing public health issue of dementia in Hawaii
-
Ongoing means of contributing to develop support programs for caregivers
